Well, it's been just over a week since we got here. Little by little we're getting a routine down. We have our new maid, Rosa, and she seems great (not scared of us, apparently). She made a great spinach lasagna for us today...yum.
Today is a holiday in Chile (Navy Day) so the girls didn't have school. So this morning I got up and made pancakes for the girls for breakfast. I was in my robe making the pancakes (one at a time on a fry pan, since I couldn't find a griddle) and in comes Rosa and the gardener, Julito. Paula had told me the gardener comes on Fridays and that Rosa makes him lunch, but I didn't quite understand the extent of the arrangement. Julito arrived this morning, introduced himself and proceeded to make himself some coffee and toast for breakfast! He asked about our pancakes so he ended up eating those for breakfast too. The kitchen was a busy place to be this morning! We sat down and had breakfast with Rosa and Julito (which apparently you don't do here), but I don't care, we're not from here!
We checked out a nice indoor pool club this afternoon and swam there with the girls for a couple hours. It was fun other than the fact that we got everything wrong (what else is new). We didn't have the documents we needed to sign up for a membership (but we were able to pay just for the day), we didn't have the required swim caps (for everyone), nor the required googles (why are those required? Aren't they for your own benefit?). But they gave us some lost-and-found swim caps and googles (eew) and we used those.
This afternoon we spent a few hours at our friends house, Alejandro and Carola. Alejandro was a classmate of mine at MIT. They only live about 2 blocks away from us and are the nicest people. Their youngest daugther was a newborn when we were in business school and now she's 15...wow, we felt old. It was great to reconnect with them.
Tomorrow Auntie Julie arrives, yay! And then we head to the beach house for a few days. Unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be rainy. Oh well. And of course a different maid (Martita) will be there at the beach house waiting there for us with lunch made (fresh fish and empanadas). She'll stay there for the few days we're there and help us.
Next week we have a busy social calendar lined up with lots of dinners at people's houses and some playdates for the kids. So Julie should have some fun and see some of the real Chile.
